Returning HIV test results to parcipants in HIV sentinel surveillence plus behavioural surveys in Viet Nam

There is a public health benefit if individuals are informed that they have tested HIV-positive and then apply preventive behaviours to prevent further transmission to their sexual and drug using partners.

In early years of HIV/AIDS epidemic, the absence of treatment created the perception that there were few personal advantages for HIV positive individuals to receive their test results compared to the potential risks including social isolation, rejection and anxiety. Antiretroviral treatment (ARV) has become available in most areas in recent years. ARV can prevent further HIV transmission to others due to viral load suppression. Therefore, it benefit both to people living with HIV as well as the uninfected population.

Provision of HIV test result and counselling help participants to understand the meaning of the result, respond to the result appropriately and obtain relevant test confirmation, prevention, care, support and treatment services.

Given the importance of returning HIV test result to partcipants, this new approach in is currently being rolled out to all 40 provinces in HIV sentinel surveillance plus behavioral surveys (HSS+). The HSS+ is conducted annually to measure HIV prevelence and risk behavior among most at risk populations including people who inject drugs, men who have sex with men, and female sex workers.
